Grounding and Thyroid Regulation
The thyroid regulates metabolism, oxygen consumption, heat production and cardiovascular activity. Through the hypothalamic pituitary thyroid axis, the pituitary releases thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH), which stimulates the thyroid to produce mainly thyroxine (T4). Tissues then convert T4 into the more biologically active triiodothyronine (T3). These hormones influence gene expression, mitochondrial respiration and cellular energy use.
Karol and Paweł Sokal examined whether grounding during nighttime rest could alter this hormonal system. Their double blind experiment included 12 adults, six women and six men, aged 34 to 60. None showed clinical signs of thyroid disease or required thyroid medication. Participants were randomly assigned to grounded or insulated groups and rested from 10 PM to 6 AM. The grounded participants were connected to moist Earth through a copper conductor.
After one night, the grounded group showed higher free T4 and TSH with lower free T3:
Free T4: 12.34 vs. 11.56 pmol/L
TSH: 1.06 vs. 0.87 mIU/L
Free T3: 5.16 vs. 5.88 pmol/L
Each difference was statistically significant at p < 0.05.
These findings show that overnight grounding influenced circulating thyroid hormones under the conditions of the experiment. The pattern should not simply be described as increased thyroid activity. TSH, T4 and T3 operate through a regulated feedback system. Their circulating concentrations reflect thyroid secretion, hormone binding, tissue uptake, clearance and the enzymatic conversion of T4 into T3. Lower free T3 therefore does not prove that tissues consumed more T3. Likewise, higher TSH and free T4 do not independently establish improved thyroid function.
Thyroid hormones directly regulate mitochondrial respiration, substrate oxidation and thermogenesis. This makes bioenergetics a logical context for interpreting the hormonal shift. However, the experiment did not measure basal metabolic rate, mitochondrial electron transport, redox state or ATP production. Its strongest conclusion is therefore precise: a single night of grounding produced a measurable change in the hormonal signals governing thyroid and metabolic physiology. The study did not test grounding as a treatment for thyroid disease.
