Natural Fabrics and Grounding: Two Complementary Benefits

Clothing and grounding influence the body’s electrical environment through different physical mechanisms.

When fabric repeatedly touches and separates from the skin or another material, electrons and ions can transfer between the surfaces. This process is known as triboelectric charging.

The voltage produced depends on the amount of accumulated charge divided by the electrical capacitance of the clothing and body relative to their surroundings. Because this capacitance is relatively small, even a small amount of separated charge can produce a large voltage.

Natural fibers such as linen absorb moisture from the air. Water and mobile ions lower the electrical resistance across the fiber surface. This allows charge to spread and decay instead of remaining concentrated in one location.

The time required for charge to decay depends on electrical resistance multiplied by capacitance. Lower resistance produces faster charge decay. Linen can therefore reduce persistent static accumulation and the local electric fields created by concentrated surface charge. Textile experiments show that moisture absorbing fabrics generally release charge faster than hydrophobic synthetics such as polyester. (Journal of the Textile Institute)

However, charge redistribution is not the same as grounding. If linen touches the skin, charge can move between the fabric and body. But when rubber soles or insulating flooring separate the body from Earth, the combined fabric and body system remains electrically isolated. The charge may become more evenly distributed, but moving charge within an isolated system does not remove its net charge or establish a stable reference potential.

A complete pathway runs from the fabric to the skin, through the body and then through conductive footwear or bare feet to the Earth.

The Earth acts as an immense charge reservoir with a relatively stable electrical potential. Once a conductive connection is established, current can flow according to the voltage difference and the total electrical resistance of the pathway. Charge can move in either direction until the voltage difference between the body and Earth is reduced.

Electrical studies have measured this charge exchange and documented substantial reductions in body voltage during grounding. (Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine; Bioelectromagnetics)

Natural fabrics and grounding are therefore complementary. Linen helps prevent charge from becoming trapped and concentrated around the body. Grounding provides the conductive route needed for electrical exchange with the Earth. One improves charge control within the clothing and body system. The other connects that system to Earth’s reference potential.
